The four-year BFA program in Fashion Design paves the way for distinctive opportunities to blend the rich history of Arab culture, fashion and traditions with the emerging fashion trends of the 21st century. The program s curriculum underscores that fashion design is far more than an exercise of producing aesthetically pleasing and beautiful clothing products, rather emphasis is put on how to develop comprehensive understanding of the discipline, including social, cultural, economic, and technological influences that have a direct impact on fashion design processes and products. The program further finds impetus in looking beyond the traditional restrictions of fashion and to scrutinize clothing as it responds to lifestyle, sculptural practice, performance, movement, costume and art. The curriculum finds further support in internships that introduce students to real-life projects and prepare them for their first-year entry level jobs. Local and international field trips offer additional academic and extracurricular learning initiatives that open students imaginations and proffer great cultural experiences. The curriculum is crowned with a state-of-the-art annual professional runway show highlighting the designs created by senior fashion students. Students plan and produce all aspects of the event, from inspiration to final execution, including model selection, fashion design, choreography, stage and set design and backstage management. Each year, the fashion show receives rave reviews from professional designers, the fashion press, guests and the Qatar community (http://www.qatar.vcu.edu/fashionshow).
