This is a 9-month, term faculty position in the VCUarts Qatar Art Foundation Program with an academic rank of Assistant Professor. Responsibilities include leading and teaching the foundation-level curriculum for the Time studio. The Time studio explores methods for time-based visual and conceptual exploration, including, but not limited to, traditional motion experiments and basics of storytelling theory, using photography, animation, video, and sound. The course exposes students to the concepts of space, performance, interaction, timing, sequencing, editing, and hybrids of those forms to communicate narrative structures through time-based media. The studio aims to balance an understanding of time as a conceptual framework with the development of critical and technical skills to allow students to apply the learning in the future major areas of study. Course assignments may change as demand requires, at the discretion of the Program Director.
The faculty member is expected to provide leadership by mentoring students; fostering collaborative partnerships, curriculum, and research across Education City with university partners and Qatar Foundation Centers, as well as VCUarts and the broader VCU campus; secure external funding; demonstrate through research, teaching, and/or public engagement the richness of diversity in the learning experience, integrate multicultural approaches and perspectives into instructional methods and research tools; and generate national and international academic, community and scholarly partnerships.
The preferred candidate will have an active professional career and demonstrate a commitment to or potential for involvement in professional national or international organizations and bodies. The faculty member s creative and research activity should make a significant contribution to a body of knowledge within an expanded definition of art or design as well as reflect a high standard of quality. Creative activities should be related to the program s wider curriculum, be consistent with and support the broader mission and initiatives of the department, School, and University, and exhibit potential for or evidence of securing external funding for scholarship or creative expression.
As a member of a community-oriented tight-knit environment, the faculty member will provide department, college, professional and community service activities. These may include serving as a peer reviewer, organizer of conferences and/or conference sessions, member of professional associations and/or providing professional service; directing and assisting with student, department and school-wide related activities; serving as an academic advisor; facilitating student activities; serving on School/University committees; and other duties as per the discretion of the program director.
MFA or terminal degree, or training and professional experience that equates to an MFA in the arts, design, or related discipline;
Must be a dynamic teacher, creative colleague, broad thinker and artist and/or designer who will want to contribute to the progressive spirit of an established Art Foundation Program.
A well-developed scholarly portfolio in area of specialization with the potential for multi-disciplinary applications and interest in developing external partnerships appropriate to complement and expand existing expertise in the department;
Must possess excellent communication skills, including verbal and written English, as all courses are taught in English;
Must have strong collaboration skills and demonstrate enthusiasm toward teaching and interacting within in a multicultural environment;
Demonstrated experience working in and fostering a diverse faculty, staff, and student environment or commitment to do so as a faculty member at VCUarts Qatar.
Experience teaching introductory studio level is preferred;
Experience in film-making, performing arts, multimedia, animation, and digital media design etc. will be considered.
