Does your CV still need a photo in the Gulf?

3 min read380 ViewsPublished on 30 Oct 2026

It is one of the first questions almost every jobseeker in the Gulf asks, and almost everyone gets a different answer. Put a photo on your CV. Never put a photo on your CV. It is expected here. It is unprofessional. You read ten opinions and end up more confused than when you started.

The honest answer is that it depends, and the good news is the decision is simple once you know what to weigh.

Start with how your CV will actually be read. More and more Gulf employers now screen applications through software before a human ever sees them. Some of those systems handle images badly, and a photo can clutter the parse or push your real content onto a second page. If you are applying through large online portals and company systems, a clean, text-first CV usually travels better than a designed one built around a headshot.

Now weigh the local norm against that. In parts of the Gulf, and in certain fields, a photo is still common and its absence is barely noticed either way. It is genuinely more accepted here than in, say, the UK or the US. So the question is not whether a photo is allowed. It is whether, for your field and your route in, it helps you or quietly works against you.

A simple way to decide. If you are in a client-facing, hospitality, or presentation-led role, and you are applying directly or through a network where a face adds warmth, a professional photo can help. If you are in a technical, corporate or process-heavy field, or applying at scale through online systems, lead with a clean, photo-free CV and let the content carry you.

Here is the part that matters more than the photo itself. If you do include one, it has to be genuinely professional: good light, a neutral background, appropriate dress, a real headshot, not a cropped holiday picture. A weak photo does far more damage than no photo. A strong one, in the right context, does a little good. No photo, done well, never hurts you.

The deeper point is that a photo is a small lever, and people agonise over it while ignoring the big ones. No headshot has ever rescued a vague CV, and none has ever sunk a sharp one.

So decide once, on your field and your route in, and move on. Put your real energy into what the words say about you.
