Why lateral moves are sometimes smarter than vertical ones

2 min readPublished on 27 Jul 2026

The default career logic is simple: move up. Get promoted. Earn more. Take on a bigger title. It is a model that works until it does not.

In this market, some of the smartest career moves professionals make are sideways. A lateral move into a new function, a different sector, or a parallel role in a faster-growing part of the business can accelerate a career in ways that a straightforward promotion sometimes cannot.

Here is why.

The region is building new industries in real time.

Tourism, entertainment, fintech, renewable energy, sports management, AI infrastructure. These sectors are growing rapidly and they need experienced professionals from adjacent fields. A marketing director moving from FMCG into destination marketing. A finance manager moving from banking into a giga-project. These are not demotions. They are strategic repositions into spaces with more room to grow.

A lateral move expands your range.

Vertical promotions deepen your expertise in one lane. Lateral moves widen the number of lanes you can operate in. For professionals aiming at senior leadership or general management, breadth of experience is often what separates the shortlisted from the overlooked.

Compensation does not always drop in a lateral move.

In growing sectors with talent shortages, lateral hires from established industries often command competitive or even higher packages. Employers in emerging sectors here understand that they are asking someone to take a risk and they compensate accordingly.

The question to ask yourself is not "is this a step up?" but "does this put me in a stronger position two years from now?"

If the answer is yes, the move is worth serious consideration regardless of whether the title changes. The professionals who build the most interesting careers here are the ones who think in trajectories, not just titles.
